Okay, let’s start off easy! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi everyone! I’m Kaitlyn Davis, Kay Marie, and just Kaitlyn to my friends 🙂 Wait, you said start off easy right? Well, the life of a writer is always a little complicated, a side effect of living in my own head so much!
I write young and new adult fantasy series under the name Kaitlyn Davis, and I write contemporary romances under the name Kay Marie! My most popular series is probably my paranormal romance, Midnight Fire, but I’ve also written an epic fantasy series, A Dance of Dragons, a chick lit series, Confessions, and a twisted fairy tale series, Once Upon A Curse! My newest book, Frost (Midnight Ice Book 1), is the first book in my new spin-off series to Midnight Fire, and it’s a paranormal adventure seeped in vampire and Greco-Roman lore.
How would you describe your writing style?
Ooh, tough! Each of my series has a different sort of mood and feel—from vampire adventure to fantasy fairy tale to swashbuckling sword and sorcery to laugh-out-loud romance—so each writing style is a little different! Overall, I would say I’m a sucker for an emotional rollercoaster ride that takes me from smiles to tears and always ends in a happily ever after!
Where do you get your ideas?
Anywhere and everywhere! I have a running list of crazy ideas in the notes section of my cell phone, and I’m constantly updating it! For my fantasies, a lot of my ideas come from dreams or quotes or artwork I’ve found online. And for my contemporary romances, many more of the ideas were inspired by real life!
It’s a pretty safe bet that anytime I’m staring off into space, I’m really just brainstorming some crazy idea that just popped into my head! My Once Upon A Curse series was first inspired by an idea I had while watching a Disney movie—what if fairy tale characters suddenly jumped out of the screen and into real life? Somehow that morphed into a post-apocalyptic world where a fantasy universe collided with earth, bringing evil queens and magic into our technological world.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer?
Trust in yourself and your fans. In my humble opinion, that is the most important thing I’ve learned! There will always be an agent who rejects you, a reviewer who gives you one star, or someone else out there to hurt your confidence in some way. But you as the writer must believe in your work and must keep pushing forward. Anytime I have any trouble believing in myself, I think of all of my amazing fans who reach out with such enthusiastically kind words, and I know at least a few other people out there believe in me too.
My new series, Midnight Ice, was actually inspired by all of the incredible responses I’ve received from my fans—a sort of thank you for all of the wonderful support! So many people reached out wanting more from my Midnight Fire characters and world, and that really pushed me to pursue a spin-off adventure!
What sort of heroines do you like?
I love a girl who can kick some ass! A lot of my female leads have been insane fighters with mystical powers, commanding leaders with a take-no-prisoners attitude, headstrong and willful girls who go with their gut and trust their instincts. A lot of the time, these are not only my favorite characters to write but also to read, because I love living vicariously through their stories, and imagining myself in the role.
But I also think it’s important to realize that a girl doesn’t have to know how to throw a punch in order to be a strong warrior! Mental strengths like cleverness and cunning and bravery are just as important, if not more so! I mean, one of my favorite characters of all time is Hermione. Sure, she could hold her own in a fight, but courage, loyalty, and intelligence were her true powers!
Can you tell us 5 random facts about yourself?
- My husband and I just rescued a Pomeranian/Dachshund mix who is the most adorable little pup in the world!
- Pertaining to the above, I’ve become a neurotic dog mom in addition to being an author 🙂
- I’m a sucker for seasonal candies and become a hoarder for candy canes, candy corn and chocolate eggs around the holidays!
- I sort of love a cheesy moment or two in books and movies—Rom Coms are my jam!
- I’m secretly obsessed with reality game shows and dream of being on Survivor or Amazing Race! And if I wasn’t married to the love of my life, let’s be honest, The Bachelorette!
What project are you working on now?
Too many! Always, too many! My mind works at a mile a minute and I’m constantly getting new ideas for a project to outline or brainstorm at a later date!
Right now, I’m focusing on the sequel to Frost because I’ve been feeling completely inspired by the story and just needed to dive in immediately. After that? Well, I’ll either work on the next book in Midnight Ice, the next book in Once Upon A Curse, or maybe a new contemporary romance for my pen name! Whatever inspires me when the time comes
Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you so much for having me!!

Even the hottest love can turn a girl cold-blooded…
Life’s tough for a vampire thief on the run—just ask Pandora Scott, she knows. Four years ago she ran away from home after everyone she loved betrayed her. But now her annoyingly grown up (and handsome) ex boyfriend is stalking her, begging her to return. A mysterious vamp with a particularly dangerous (and sexy) stare keeps popping unexpectedly into her life. The extremely powerful head vampire of New York is hunting her down because she may or may not have broken into his highly-secure, highly-secretive personal vault. And the fate she’s been trying to outrun? Well, it’s about to catch up. Because even a super-speedy vamp with the ability to disappear can’t escape her own destiny.
A brand new spinoff to Midnight Fire, a bestselling series with over 200,000 copies sold and over 5000 5-star reviews on Goodreads! Fans will enjoy special appearances from Kira, Luke and Tristan while falling in love with the new characters and new adventure of Midnight Ice.
